picvideo mjpg registration

I would like to register the picvideo mjpg codec. I copied the dll to my fake windows drive. Made the proper entries with wine tools to the "windows registry". Virtualdub opens files encoded with mjpg using streamer and mjpgtools. Of course the file shows the watermark for the "unregistered" codec. I have been in touch with tech support from pegasus and this was the wonderful response I got:

Sorry, we support the codec on Windows only.

Thanks,
Richard -- Pegasus Support

So my question is Does anybody know how or where to make the proper entries in the windows reg to register this codec. I'm only guessing it's probably a registry setting because I copied the .dll directly from my old windows drive.
Any thoughts or info would be greatly appreciated

Absolutely: do not use the codec. This would be a good time to migrate to a free codec

OK - no need to look at me like that... I think you need to reread the eula that comes with the software. Check that you actually own a licence to run this software under linux.

I suspect you have to regester each machine-incedence of the codec that you install ... so migrating it to linux under wine requires you to re-run the online registration software.

Welcome to the difference between proprietary and free software.

BTW: for this reason I used to keep an old windows box on my network. It would run the odd bit of software what I absolutely ahd to have on occasion, usually at someone elses insistance. It was also useful since itmeant I got to keep the licence I had for some of the nicer ms stuff... if the licence was sufficiently relaxed (and in those days they were - though "relaxed" is not the right word) I could use some things on linux.

I could access the win box from the linux pc, even remote-desktop with vnc, so I could keep the box behind my desk without clutter. It looked pretty good to see windows relegated to a window inside gnome...

However, after a while I noticed that nobody had accessed the win box in about a year... I removed it, installed ubuntu to it, and gave it away. Nobody noticed.
