PIC Programmer for UNIX??

Hi
I'm quite a noob in the linux world, and was wondering if there are any good PIC programmer speciallized for UNIX available, I have noticed that there are loads of programming software available for windows, but not for unix. The only one that I know of is GNU PIC or GPASM, which I'm not too sure if they will work without any bugs.
Can some one point me to the right direction to start programming PIC in UNIX??
thanks
Chris

yea..well...but they don't seem to be very reliable. Does any one have any experience in this??
And also does any one have any good books to start programming PIC?? I found a good book called Programming and Customizing the PIC Micro (TAB Electronics Technical Library) but after reading people complainning typos and incorrect info, I kinda need some help in recommending a good solid book for me to start. Thanks
chris
