PHP installation with zlib on gentoo

I have a question regarding the installation of PHP with zlib support on a gentoo. The Zlib is installed by gentoo, and therefore it does not have a base directory. However, in order to have zlib support in PHP, i need to specify the "base directory" in which zlib is installed. How do I do that? Where should this "base directory" be?

Are you truing to install from source? In that case use:
./configure --with-zlib ...
among the other options you want and see what happens.
Anyway the libraries are usually located under /usr/lib.
