PHP and XML

I am trying to use PHP to generate Web pages dynamically from data held in XML format.

This requires the use of a PHP-based XML parser called Expat, and as I am using Apache 1.3.23 on Mandrake 9.1, this is already installed.

Yet for some reason the Expat commands in my PHP script are not recognized and so I keep getting the error "Fatal error: Call to undefined function: xml_parser_create"

I have looked in the php.ini file and tried to point it towards the directory where the Expat files live, but without success.

Has anybody been down this path and worked out how to configure this?
