Photoshop CS2: Error when opening files (Wine 1.1.8, Ubuntu Intrepid x86_64)

Whenever I try to open a Photoshop file (whether created by PsCS3/Mac or this copy running on Wine) I get an error that says "Could not complete your request because of a program error." Nothing is sent to stderr between clicking Open in the dialog and this message appearing. Does anyone know of a workaround, patch, hack, or anything I can use to get Photoshop working? I can't seem to find this happening anywhere else, except here, which references the Mac version of CS2, and here which wasn't solved. Note: I am having the same problem when entering text.

NOTE: I am fully and completely aware of the existence of GIMP, GIMPshop, Krita and the like. I love free and open source software, hence why I'm using linux, but they don't really work for me, and I do use a lot of the features in photoshop that are not present, difficult to find and use or not up to scratch in these alternatives.

Possibly a dumb question, but why don't you use the GIMP under Linux?

Have you checked to see if the WINE folks have any info?

yeah so far nothing..

So far it seems that i cannot open PSD files, but jpegs and pngs open fine. And as the poster at the toi, the text tool gives the same error

I'd like to bump this thread up as I have the same problem using the text tool and opening files where the text tool has been used. I'm having a really hard time with this as graphic design is my hobby and side business. Any ideas? I am running Ubuntu Hardy Heron and I always start CS2 with Ctrl-Shift-Alt to delete the preferences file. Thanks!

Hi,

Even if last post is a few months old, I didn't find any answer on the web, so I'm posting mine here.

Got it sorted after almost a half-day banging my head on my desk.

I had exact same symptoms :
- able to open Photoshop
- able to create and save files in any format (PSD included)
- able to open flattened files (jpg, png,...)
- but unable to reopen any PSD files created on Mac, Win nor Ubuntu.

So I installed Windows system fonts and it then worked like a charm :

$sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts

and then (to make sure font cache is regenerated) :

$sudo fc-cache -fv

My two cents are that Photoshop uses MS system fonts for displaying layers/options/paths info and/or other stuff.
