I'm looking for suggestions on local (not web!) photo gallery and database creating/managing program. I have tried digikam, it is nice and simple, but I would like to have something more. I try to describe what I would like to have and what I do not think digikam has, please correct me if I am wrong. Also, I know there are good php/mysql gallery programs, but I would not like to set up web server for just that purpose.
I would like the program to based on a real database program, mysql or berkeley or something. I think that would increase the portability, especially in a way that the database, with tags, comments and descriptions, is not too tightly integrated to one program (digikam). If I move to another computer or operating system, I would not like to loose my custom database which I might have spent a lot of time to create.
Tagging system of digikam seems too simple as well. I can not find a way to make custom search by tags. Like if I want to have tags for quality (or secret, not for guests) besides tags by categories, I can't find a way to do this.
Flagging could be somewhat different or easier as well (customisable and via keyboard).
i'd have to recommend using Gallery2, which is php based. you say you don't want a web program, but there's nothign cose to it, and running just that on an apache server is not big deal really, and interfaces excellently with either postgresql or mysql.
I don't know of any programs that would use a database like mysql or any other to handle a localized photo gallery. If you really don't want a web based gallery, using something like gthumb might work, just place your thumbs in whatever directory you want and orgaize them accordingly, then use gthumb to view them, etc.
Thanks for the answers. My main concern is, that if I use something like gthumb and want to handle all my photos, say some several tens of thousands in a few years, and want to search by some specific options from all my albums, will it work. And can I by sure that some program will recognize gthumb in 10 years so I do not loose my customizations?
Well, anyway, seems that I have apache+php+mysql now installed and working on a laptop, so I am going to test gallery. We anyway use gallery on my wifes webpage, so it might be useful to get to know this stuff in more detail anyway.
So, thanks for the hints and I am still looking for options other than web based. I do not think that gallery will allow me a full screen view, it depends on the capabilities of a browser?
