phat linux setup problems
I found the phat linux ver.3.3 and am a newbe to linux so it sounded like a good introduction.One problem though-when running setup like I am told to do in the readme I get a Run-time error '53 "file not found".I tried installing vbruntime6 and it did nothing to help.Any ideas?Am I overlooking something obvious or is it something more involved?Also I have Redhat linux 5.2 delux cd-is this a better os?And if so can a newbe like me get it run and install properly?I've done partioning in windows based systems useing fdisk is this a similar deal or is it more complicated than fdisk.I'm useing a Packard Bell Platinum Supreme 1850 with a 233mmx pentium pro processor/40mb edo ram/6.4 gb seagate udma 33 hd/u.s. robotics external 56k sportster modem/48x memorex cdrom/video is built in cirrus logic 5429 2mb/azt 3011 pnp soundcard.Any problems with this setup and linux(other than its a Packerd Bell)?Thanx in advance to anyone who responds-as I desperetly need to break free from the windows os.LINUX will hopefully be my new found joy!Yes I do have a boreing life!:Pengy:

Plain and simple ---

file not found means there is not a file by the name you typed at the path you typed.

where is this file?

is it on a cdrom?

are you booting from a floppy?

if you can see the file by doing ls -a

then the file is in your current folder

you can use ./setup to run it


I would recommend redhat because I use it :p

but really it is as user friendly as it gets in my opinion.

Phat Install
 

I have the exact same problem... The installer seems to get "tricked up" with the downloaded zip file.. I would also really like to figure this out.. Have you tried burning the extracted files onto a CD. Maybe that's the runtime error.

Another possibility that just occured to me.

The setup file is a link. which is pointed to a file that is not there.

try cat setup to see it's contents.

do this
 

get vbruntime dlls then run setup...

or

unzip the zip file to "c:\phat"

unzip again another phat zip file

then edit linux.bat, u should find a value there
about how much u have, change that u how much
ram u have

i had the same problem, but honestly, phatlinux, from what i experienced.. isn't worth the hassle, just go and download mandrake or something similar. phatlinux isn't as easy as it was made out to be. it didn't recognize some of my hardware, and mandrake did.. plus it autoset up my dhcp settings, which phat didnt, but hey.. i'm just a newbie.. but thats what i have come to thnk

You can try out VectorLinux ...its a nice small distro that can start the installation from within Windows. But its a real powerful Linux, so you will need to have partitions available.

I installed it on my IBM Thinkpad notebook since I had only 2gb HD space.

If you have a fat pipe and wan't to get your feet wet a little bit without partitioning perhaps you could try DemoLinux, SuSE Live, or one of the other distros that allow you to run linux from cd. Only one I have tried is DemoLinux and it actually runs fairly fast straight from cd, but you can anchor it to an existing fat32 partition to give it a little swap to speed things up, and of course if you so desire you can also install.
