permission for directory by different group

HI,

We want to assign read and execute permission only for the directory "data" which is present in user "john's" home area (/home/uk/physics/john/experiments/data). john user belongs to physics group (his home dir is : /home/uk/physics/john) the user "joe" whose group is chemistry and whose home dir is /home/us/chemistry/joe. How joe can access data dir which is present insie john's home area.

Code:
chmod 000 / -R
chmod 555 /home/uk/physics/john/experiments/data

Also joe cant access data in johns directories due to only having read and execute permission on this lone directory but needs access all the way up from his current working directory.

Make a group name it "science", make Joe and John a member of this group and assign the directory "data" to the group "science".

A better approach would be putting the dir "data" outside John's Home.

If you give access files read only permission then it hsould not be a problem. Are you giving none permission for others?
Do you want that Joe should not see other contents of Jhn's other directory's contents.
