perl problem on redhad

I have perl 5.8.0 on redhat enterprise linux 3. It runs well for most perl programs. But I have problems to use XML::Twig.

When I try to run:

perl -e 'use XML::Twig'

and get:

Weak references are not implemented in the version of perl at /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.0/XML/Twig.pm line 96
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.0/XML/Twig.pm line 129.
Compilation failed in require at -e line 1.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at -e line 1.

Also, when I try:

perl -MCPAN -e shell

and get:

Undefined value assigned to typeglob at (eval 17) line 15, <RC> line 11.
Warning [/etc/inputrc line 11]:
Invalid variable `mark-symlinked-directories'

cpan shell -- CPAN exploration and modules installation (v1.76)
ReadLine support enabled

cpan>
