PDF --> EPUB. Software?

Does Anything do pdf --> epub?

I have slackware-14.0, and xfce. No high cholesterol WMs, but I did install the libs, and am not afraid of source code. I also have Android 4.x and the libreoffice epub plugin. So, I suppose

libreoffice <-- pdf might get me there.

I'm doing Electronics, and this year's lecturers are dtp technophopbes :-/.

Yup. Calibre does it quite nicely.

Ehhh.....I'd have to say "It does it". "nicely" would be a bit of a stretch, in my opinion. If you'd like to do one or two manually, then it's fine...if you're looking to batch things out, and your input PDF's have varying fonts, embedded pictures/captions, etc., then good luck. Granted, it did WORK, and generate an epub file that did open. But it looked horrible.

Now your needs may be different than mine were...I was asked to look into batch-processing over 20k scientific journal articles.

I was assuming (perhaps incorrectly) that this was for individual rather than mass conversions. I see your point that Calibre would not be suitable for the task. On the whole I think Calibre does a reasonable job for converting to a given epub format (Cybook Gen3 in my case).

The two tools that you'll use to build ePubs are calibre and sigil.

Neither one will take you "directly from a PDF to an ePub." And, I submit, there's a reason for that . . . the two targets are, inherently, very different. One is a printed page. The other is a web-browser.

However, both of them, put together, can produce publishable ePubs. Takes a bit of learning-curve but it works.

Oh, very much so...and calibre CAN handle mass-conversions, and can be run from the command line. I'm not knocking it as a tool, but was just noting some of the difficulties I had with getting things converted correctly. The embedded graphics and font issues were what gave me fits. Nothing but text? No problems.

And thanks, sundialsvcs...I hadn't heard of sigil before, and will check into it.

Edit: What does the pdf --> something conversion best?

Thanks, Guys, Alien Bob has slackware packages for Sigil and Calibre, and I grabbged them, so I am positioned on the bottom of the learning curve, and weĺl see how I get on from there.

My input is: A few of my own documents; a number of m$.doc, m$.docx, and M$.docx or ppt --> pdf with standard windows fonts, heavy on mathematical formulae and usually lacking any table of contents. If I get time to give this a decent shot, I'll report back on my success or lack of it.

The other awkward one is references where a number isn't good enough. I would like to be able to insert more varied references - say to a scripture from the bible with a link back to the text, or a descriptive title for the reference.

I have mastered TOC, and footnotes/endnotes in Libreoffice. So I have some way to go.
