partitioning linux partition

because of some annoying reasons i need to install windows xp on my pc together with my suse distro
I tried to just insert the xp cd at the boot but i got a black screen so i figured i first needed to format some space to make it work but fdisk or expert partitioner didnt want to work cuz it said i would have to unmount my disk first, well.. no thanks have no clue how to do that and really have no clue what to do now
i really need to resize my linux partition into blank space or ntfs so i can install xp

plz ppl help me it was not my first choice to go back to windows but i cant get a hold of wine and first of all i cant even get along with linux :( i first need some time to get to know it

The first thing you will need to do is to boot up on a rescue disk; the first SuSE install disk should offer the option of a rescue system. This is because you can't make changes to a hard-disk partition if you're using it, so you need to take your filesystem off the CD.

Start up YaST and take a look at the hard disk configuration options; you may be able to just resize a Linux partition. If not, then look for a program called gnuparted to resize the filesystem. If you don't have that, then please post back the filesystem that you are actually using.

Another option you have is to delete the swap partition, and install Windows on however much space that frees up. (Note that this may slow your computer down in Linux). You can create a swap file later on if you need the extra memory, although you won't get back the speed of a dedicated swap partition (then again, you may not notice any slow-down).

iluvlinux; question? why did u not leave xp
alone then install suse after, that would have avoided what u now have? i too prefer linux but due to fact of becoming dependant on w followed advice from mdk8.1 to leave w98 as is & install mdk8.1 after ,with just shrinking w smaller. to 15gb the rest of hdd is linux including swapspace. no problems & still running both but asap dump w. & still learning linux ;secondxsecond, dayxday &
month x month till get it right.
