I am planning to install linux with my other co-existing operating systems - WinME and WinXP.
Here's my current configuration :
Disk 1 - Drive C (Primary) - WinME
Disk 1 - Drive E (Extended Logical) - WinXP
Disk 1 - Drive F (Logical) - Data
Disk 1 - Drive Z (Logical NTFS) - Data
Disk 2 - Drive D (Primary) - Data
Disk 2 - Drive X (Logical FAT32) - Data
Disk 2 - Drive G (Logical FAT32) - Data
All are FAT32 unless stated.
I have read somewhere in the Partition Magic 7 Help file and it says that if i choose to install LILO, i need to have it in the FIRST logical partition in an
extended partition. I know what this means, but is this truly necessary? That's the first question. Next is i have heard of the 1024 cylinder limitation and
i am using an Asus P3V133 M/B which i'm not sure if this M/B and it's BIOS (Award) supports LBA32. Not to mention that is LBA the same as LBA32?
My bios supports LBA, so does this mean that it is the same as LBA32? From what i've read, Redhat 7.2's LILO can support LBA32 which goes over the 1024 cylinder limitation, is this true?
Also, before installing Red Hat 7.2, if ever my BIOS supports LBA32 and all that, should i partition my hard drive before-hand using PM7 or should i leave UNPARTITIONED space and use disk druid instead?
There was 1024 cylinder limitation, but in older versions of lilo. This one with RH7.2 is newer one, I think.
LILO do not need to be installed in the first logical partition. But it must have aposssibility to run. If you're planning to use XP boot manager just install lilo in the beggining of the main Linux partition (root).
You can partition your hd with PM or leave free space. The choice is yours. I prefer leaving free space, but it's just a matter of taste.
What do you mean by "it must have aposssibility to run" ? However, earlier you said that LILO does NOT need to be installed in the first logical partition.
LILO has been kinda dropped as the default bootloader since rh7.0
Use GRUB. Do a search string:
'cubed' in the user name search and 'dual boot' in the topic search.
in this forum and you'll get a very big and long thread walking you through the process. Dual or triple boot, same thing for GRUB. No cylinder limits or tweaking LBA with GRUB either.

Simply it can be started by NT/XP boot loader. The process has been described many times on this forum.
Now you're probably wondering what is LILO and all this stuff for. Simply, in linux you can have many kernels, but you should choose which one to boot this time. That's main reason for having LILO/GRUB/Systlinux etc. Different OSes are just an "extension".
For your system, the first partition is FAT32, WinME, you could install lilo on MBR. However, it's safe if you have a 20mb /boot partition under the 1024 cylinder or 8gb limit.
If the first is XP, you can't put anything there, XP will try to rewrite itself to MBR. That's why many let XP do the boot job and write lilo to a file and save it in c:\.
Thanks for all the help guys. I've already managed to get RH 7.2 up and running perfectly with my other 2 OSes - WinMe and WinXP and after the 1024 cylinder limit as well.
