Pan
I'm using Pan 0.14.2, but when I open it and ask to get the new headers from the groups I subscribed to, it doesn't retrieve new headers.
It still worked yesterday. I posted something last night and that worked, because I can see it when I head to Google Groups. I just can't see it in Pan. |
Have you tried a few different news servers ? If nothing else has changed on your system that you know of, then the most likely cause seems to be a fault at your usual server.

right click on your newsgroup, choose "delete groups articles" then right click on it again, choose "more download options" and choose download all headers....see if that works for ya.

@mjrich
I tried googling for some public newsservers. When I want to use them in Pan, I get the question: should the groups be retrieved. I choose yes, but it seems unable to connect to the server. @detp After clicking "get all headers", it downloads only the headers I already had before deleting the groups articles. |
Check that you are actually able to connect to that news server first - with most you need an account (teranews.com seems quite good from the front, though I have never tried it).
Also, you may want to check that you have RW permissions within ~/.pan/*. Cheers, mj |
You know a suitable news server that is actually free?
I'm paying my ISP to be able to use Usenet, so I'm not keen on paying a second time for that service. If the problem is indeed related to my ISP's news server, I shall complain to them. |
You could have a look through http://dmoz.org/Computers/Usenet/Public_News_Servers, though my suspicion is that if you haven't changed anything else in your system, you've got plenty of disk space, and you haven't changed any permissions lately, then it's most likely due your ISP.
One last option would be to start up Pan with the --debug option, and see if anything unexpected crops up. Cheers, mj |
It probably is my ISP, but I find it rather strange that yesterday I did a post and though I didn't see it appear in Pan, it certainly got through.
I can see it via Google Groups. |
Well, there's always the knee-jerk reaction frequently used over here - blame it on incompetent ISP staff :)

Anyway, thanks for the help. Maybe things are going better (or worse) tomorrow.
I'll mail my ISP to get some information. |
