Angry Package Conflicts with KDE

I'm new to linux, so I'm going to appoligize in advanced for my basic knowledge of this OS. I'm using redhat linux 9. I'm trying to run the up2date program in order to install the updates. Every update installs fine excpept for one of them. I keep getting this error when it tries to install "Test install failed because of package conflicts:
file /usr/bin/appletproxy from install of kdebase-3.1-15 conflicts with file from package kdebase-3.1-12". I'm not sure how to fix this, so tha tI can correctly install this update. Does anyone know? Thanks!

John

P.S. I'm kinda confused.. Are X Windows System, KDE Desktop Environment, and GNOME Desktop Environment all different GUIs for Linux? Which should I use?

Don't know if X window system is actually a GUI on itself but Gnome and KDE are. Gnome and KDE are desktop environments with a lot of extra software in it. Just try it and you see what you like. I found KDE really slow and gnome better but I'v erecently switched to Icewm and I like it better than both. There are a lot of GUIs, just try and see what you like. Gnome and KDE have (IMO) some easier configuration but most of the time it's because of all the extra software included which does more for you and you don't have to configure too much.
