p2p that actually works??

i can't get kazaa lite to work under WINE

xmule doesn't compile

apollon requires fasttrack, which requires giFT, which requires libtool, which doesn't compile

does anyone know of a package of some sort that will allow me to easily set up a p2p program in linux?? this is really getting frustrating. i have to go over to windoze just to download a song.

thanks for any suggestions.

I am using limewire. You have to install a java virtual enviroment. The only bad thing about limewire is there are not that many files on it. And it only displays the file name under search.

I use lopster. It uses opennap servers and has a listing for the WinMX peer network...although I've never been able to connect to WinMX. It's an easy install and I've been very happy with the results.

i can't get either of those to work.

i got a limewire rpm and it says it's already installed when i know it isn't

if i > locate limewire it finds nothing.

try looking at the software page of the link below, there are several P2P options there, none will compare with kazaa(lites) database for mp3's but each has its advantages.

hmmm
I don't know what to tell you? I will put some instructions on here for you maybe u arte doing something wrong.

Maybe i'm just cynical, but I'll never bother with anything other than KaZaa (fasttrack network) for P2P. There are relatively few people using the other networks; so I can't really get the deviant porn I like. We really need the masses using KaZaa to supply the community with content. Try getting them to use eDonkey or whatever.... I have a windows box just for KaZaa and a couple of games because I've given up trying to get it to work on linux.

Don't get me wrong; I've gotten it to work under Wine several times, but for some reason with each new version of wine, the same windows apps may or may not run. ...and I'm too much of a dumbass to document what i'm doing, so it's frustrating. But, take a look at sites such as frankscorner, which have some tutorials on getting kazaa lite working under linux.

And when I got it to work, it worked really really well... just dont stir the air too much and try not to adjust the lighting in the room or your whole box might crash.

gtk-gnutella...hands down the best native linux p2p application.

crashmeister 08-06-2003 05:15 AM

mldonkey - get a static build if the dynamic doesn't work.Anyway sounds more like a problem with your box than the p2p apps since nothing compiles.

MasterC 08-06-2003 05:54 AM

For quite some time I too had to reboot for the sole purpose of P2P (though I hated Kazaa and Used Grokster). I tried to get by with the Gnutella network, that definitely didn't cut it, the apps for that are things like LimeWire and Gtk-Gnutella. Finally I was able to get giFT working with giFTcurs as my front end on a Gentoo setup. It has been the GREATEST thing for P2P that I've found since I started the whole thing back with Imesh Napster and Wrapster (yeah, you guys remember Wrapster right?).

I'd say see about getting whatever you need going to get giFT installed, really I love it and with FastTrack/OpenFT/Gnutella as a working pool of files to choose from, it's been GREAT! I've also heard great things from the mldonkey crowd, so if you can get that running, I'm sure it's at least equally as good (but I'm very content with my working giFT setup I don't worry about it ;) ).

Cool

hey, I noodled with Gift for a bit myself, but I gave up and moved on before I could get it running. What front-end have you had the most success with, Master? Does it really support FastTrack??? If so, that would be a MAJOR development for linux p2p. I read that it supported FastTrack at one time but no longer does. Care you set the record straight?

MasterC 08-06-2003 11:14 PM

I can get on no problem. Again, the only luck I've had was with Gentoo though, the ebuild in there is definitely a working/good one. You will need to also compile/emerge in the fasttrack plugin, but that's all with Gentoo ;) The best part of it all, I don't even need to reboot from Slack to use it. I ebuild it in Gentoo, inside a chroot'd env, and then chroot into that partition to run that ;)

Maybe it's just me, but I don't think I ever was able to do that in windoze :D

Cool

wow.. i'm gonna give giFT another try then. I still have windows for neverwinter nights toolkit and a few other games, but a native linux p2p with multiple protocol support including fast track is what i've been waiting for!

speaking of giFT and kazaa.... check this out :
http://apollon.sourceforge.net/

MasterC 08-07-2003 01:19 AM

I'm a command line type a guy, but even so, I believe giFTcurs is the best front end I've come across so far. You don't need a big old fat gui to download things, just to watch videos is that's what you get. giFTcurs is an excellent front end, low resource using, for giFT.

Cool
