Overriding dll's in Wine

I would like to try some dll overriding to try and get directx to work. I own Windows XP. My first trial was with Guild Wars. With no overriding, the program started up and complained that directx was not found. It then gave me an error message and shut down. Next, I tried adding my dlls to the override section in winecfg (I looked up the directx dlls online). I copied my dlls to the windows/system32 part of Wines fake windows directory. I ran the program and got the exact same result. How do I know if my dll's were actually used?
