osx shadows in gnome

this is rather an asthetic question. i run osx on my ibook and this is the first time i am really getting into gnome after installing ubuntu on a thinkpad t20. i like the fact that i can configure gnome to look very much like osx. however, i know it's not all that important to the functionality, but i am curious as to how i see screenshots in gnome-look.org that display the same shadowing features as osx. i have tried to search these forums and googled it but i don't suppose my search strings are correct since i am not coming up with much. any pointing in the right direction would be appreciated. TIA.

Search for "composite", that should give you better results

X.org from 6.8.1 onwards has the XComposite extension which allows things like shadows, real translucency and other eye candy stuff. It's pretty hard on your graphics card do you mightn't like it once you get it working though but different people get different results. In 6.8 it's been very iffy and not exactly stable. The situation has improved dramatically in X.org 7 but I don't think many distros have updated to that yet.
