origins of the .d extension?

Hi
rc.d
init.d
conf.d

and so on. What are the origins of the .d extension? (I've googled it but hit a blank). (This isn't just curiosity: it might help me get a grip on what things do).

thanks in advance

It stands for 'Directory'. You can have an individual file that can be used for all configuration, or you can seperate the configuration into seperate files and put them into a directory so you won't have to search through a huge file to change one little thing.
