Original quake on linux

has anyone found and successfully played the original quake on linux? I have found some procedures online, but many of them were outdated with broken links to necessary files. I got quake3 working, but I'd be more amused if I got the original Quake on there.

edit: sorry, i meant to put this in the games sub-forum

Get the quake data files (either legally or otherwise ) then get the darkplaces program which is an SDL-GL interface to the game. i.e. a rewritten program.
