Oracle 8.1.7 for linux- basic installation question

Hello All,

Does anyone know of good documentation for installing Oracle for Linux?

I"ve installed Oracle 8.1.7 on Solaris 9 a bunch of times and installing Oracle on Windows XP is a piece of cake.

I have the files I need for a Linux installation but so far I haven't been able to run the installer at the command line or in my KDE home directory. As far as built-in documentation, it came with a bunch of readme files but they are release notes.

Here is all I have done so far:

tar xvf linux81701.tar which made a directory called Disk1

Inside of the directory there are 2 runInstaller files. The first one is in /Disk1 and its a shell script. tried ./runInstaller and received a looping error that basically said that my directory wasn't found, I'm thinking because the directory's name had spaces and no underscore in it so...

I moved the tar file to a new Directory called Oracle and once again ran tar xvf linux81701.tar, which once again made a new Disk1 directory and tried the installer in there and all it did was initialize Java and go back to $ right away.

I tried the other, this time executable, runInstaller file in /Disk1/install/linux which once again initialized Java but is stalled at "please wait..."

I'm wondering if I'm installing it the wrong way or if my Java is bad. Still trying to find exactly where Java is installed on my computer but that shouldn't take too long. I know I rambled a little but any help or documentation would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Tammy

ok I'm back -

looks like it was trying to initialize Java from ../stage/Components.oracle.swd.jre/1.1.8/1/DataFiles/Expanded/linux/bin/jre

just found that part - still not up and running. thx again.

Go to technet.oracle.com, register if you have not been there before, and then download the installation guide (it's a pdf).

Hi,

Yes, I'm a member of OTN and I went there first. Instead of going to the regular documentation area though I went to the Linux technology forum where they keep installation notes from users. I'm trying to do an install on Mandrake 9.2 and I only saw notes for Redhat 9 which I grabbed anyway knowing that Mandrake can usually use Redhat installation notes for various applications. Plus after a quick glance I noticed that some of the basic set up was familiar (groupadd, mkdir var/opt/oracle, etc) when compared to Solaris 9 documentation.

So anyway, thanks for the reminder 'cause after looking at those files I totally forgot about going back to the pdf documentation area, or I guess the official Oracle documentation area. I will post another message in here once I get Oracle running and linked up w/my database. Thanks again.

Tammy
