Opera problem

Okay - so I downloaded Opera 6.12 for Linux in RH8.

Seemed okay. Then got advice that Opera causes problems so didnot use it again.

Now - Opera shows window when I log in - no option to stop it. Second problem - top menu bar has gone above screen and can't see "X" to stop application, or "file".

It is using resources and I want to stop it. Any help really appreciated.
Thanks
Rose

Hi

a simple ctrl Q will quit opera. (if the opera window
is active that is, so move your mouse pointer or click
it)

or fire up a console like xterm, type;
ps aux
see what PID number opera uses,type;
kill -9 PIDNO
and see opera flushing down the drain

good luck

Opera 6 was a little buggy. Opera 7.1 for Linux has just been released. It's nice...

... but slow. The beta is still a little buggy and the out-of-nowhere-segmentation faults of 6.xx are a lot less. But the king of speed is still Opera 6.12 for me.

in speed opera definitly rules try this
add this to your .Xdefaults file
opera.geometry:200x200

never used it but it should work(anyway it work for emcas)

What will this do? Thanks.

Also thanks to above respondents ...

Ctrl Q did not work BTW and haven't tried the other suggestion yet. I still like Opera so am going to keep trying it. If I download the newer version do I need to uninstall 6.12, or can it just sit there?

Thanks
Rose

Killing it by PID from the command line/xterm will work.

Geometry sets where the window will open up so that you can keep it from getting in the way of stuff. :)

Not sure about installing over the top vs. uninstalling - often varies from app to app and the Opera docs should say.

so far I had no trouble installing 7.1 b1 over 6.12 or vice versa.

Even the settings were kept (where possible) :)

Wow - okay ...

I just installed Opera 7.1. So far so good. I even got the ctrl Q to work to quit opera 6.12.

It has transferred my bookmarks too!

Only problem - got this message:
opera: [java} Disabling java due to potential problems. If you know what you are doing, you can set the environment variables OPERA-FORCE-JAVA-ENABLED to "1" to othis. Start opera with '-debugjava' argument for more information.

I know I read somewhere about this but cannot think where and what - any ideas?

Thanks
Rose
