Unhappy Opensuse13.1 wireless not working after installaion

Hi,

I built a new computer. Without any operating system in it when I run opensuse 13.1 every thing seems to work fine.

But after I install it, the wireless is not working. When I try to click on 'network' message says something like network not supported in this system.

I did notice when installing after I remove the installation disk and during rebooting every thing says 'ok' but one thing said 'failed', but it was so fast I could not see what it was.

At the moment I have temporarily installed mint 15 which is not ideal.

Please help! Thanks in advance.

Usually if you have some OS working installed you can gather information from it.

Find out what chip the wireless is running in Mint.

Then boot to the live OpenSuse cd/dvd/usb and see if the same is also being shown as a supported chip in wireless.

Things that have to happen to get wireless.(basic summary)

Driver available and not a wrong driver loaded.

Tcp/ip available to include dhcp or other means to connect out.

Wireless control. Some app or way to tell the wireless what to do.

User ability to have wireless connect.

Thank you

Best place to start in Opensuse would be this. http://opensuse-guide.org/wlan.php

http://en.opensuse.org/HCL:Network_%28Wireless%29

Here are some links to generic stuff.

http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/linux-f...river-chipset/

http://linux.die.net/man/8/lsmod

http://linux.die.net/man/8/lspci

I don't use mint enough to tell how to from gui. For Mint, use the term ubuntu instead or in addition to when doing web searches.
For example see a post like this.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=862026

This also needs to be looked at with the last four lines of my prior post.

On Opensuse live the result for lsmod looks the same. It wouldnt let me get a result for lspci unless I sign in as root which dosent seem possible on a live run.

Wont beable to go on live if I install opensuse will try another way to install and get a result and post online.

The network Control panel does not look anything like the first picture in the link that you sent. http://opensuse-guide.org/wlan.php

r8169 67446 0

It seems to suggest a realtek, very common. I'd assume then that your Opensuse has the module already loaded. Since it is same in both, I assume it is correct. That then leaves us to next steps. Meaning configure/enable wireless and ip on it.

See this post maybe now. http://forums.opensuse.org/showthrea...-connect/page3

In OpenSuse you usually have to go in an enable networking.

Live cd's often run as root. Some require you to run sudo pw to change password from blank to something.

That guide is just showing the pop up from the lower right part of the desktop. The author clicked on something there, maybe network.

I wanted to update my usb to 13 so I could see along with you on this. I didn't get to it.

If you dual boot, some odd wake issue may be there.

Hi Jefro, thanks again.

I have now downloaded the driver (r8168-8.037.00.tar.bz2) will remember to copy to a usb before I install opensuse.

I would never have guessed that r8169 67446 0 is the chipset, I would have thought that "05:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9300 Wireless LAN adaptor (rev 01)" is the one, so thank you for pointing me in the right direction.

Could you please tell me how to Set the 13.1 install-DVD as a repository in Yast (step 5 in the instructions from the link you gave) and step 14 to remove it from the repo. Thanks.

Opppss!!!!!!!!!

You are right. I saw the rt and forgot you were working on wireless. This happens when you get old. The rt is onboard lan.

Is this what I have to do ---- (copied from this site - http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/ath9k )

Enabling ath9k

To enable ath9k, you must first enable mac80211 through make menuconfig when compiling your kernel. If you do not know what this means then please learn to compile kernels or rely on your Linux distribution's kernel. Below are the options you need to enable ath9k through make menuconfig.

Networking --->
Wireless --->
<M> Improved wireless configuration API
<M> Generic IEEE 802.11 Networking Stack (mac80211)

You can then enable ath9k in the kernel configuration under

Device Drivers --->[*] Network device support --->
Wireless LAN --->
Atheros Wireless Cards ---->
<M> Atheros 802.11n wireless cards support

Also Could you please tell me how to Set the 13.1 install-DVD as a repository in Yast (step 5 in the instructions from the link you gave) and step 14 to remove it from the repo. Thanks.
