openSUSE11.4 - wire/wireless icon in tray
 

First, I know that the wireless devices are working properly as other OSs on this HD work in various forms both .deb and .rpm.

In setting up openSUSE11.4, no matter which wireless device in WPA is installed, the icon will go to the wired icon, not the wireless. You can see it trying to go to a wireless icon, but then it reverts to the wired one. I'm beginning to think that this a OS problem in itself and not an install problem.

Any ideas?

Are you using KNetworkManager? There are two symbols (one twisted "N" residing in the normal part of the menu bar and a stylized cell phone in the system tray). Clicking on the "N" produced the "cell phone" in case that is absent...

I rec'd your other message about why I didn't answer within this one - simply because my head has been literally clouded for the last few days with a bastard cold which has me thinking in crooked paths.

I forgot to mention that this problem with the network wireless icon exists only within KDE. Doing what you said by clicking on the "N" does not produce the wireless icon in this copy of openSUSE 11.4.

However, if I install the OS with under Gnome, then everything works fine. I set up the wired device for "on" upon boot. Then one clicks the network icon and it produces the existing wireless points and then one can select one or the other (I have 2), set them up and then within the same window disconnect the wired device, thus leaving the system on in wireless only.

Seems to be a world wide plague what with those colds, we had them here, too. As to the problem with KDE, my best guess would be to dig in the KDE control center for clues. Sorry, I can't be more specific, as I have absolutely no experience with wireless. Good luck and good health ;).
