OpenOffice.org opening MSOffice files

Greetings

Since long I had this major problem when opening MS Word docs at OpenOffice.org Writer. The document format gets all shuffled. Paragraphs go out of place and fonts are changed (and also I realised that Italics just doesn't seem to work).
I just would like to know if that is normal or perhaps I'm doing something terribly wrong.

Mine seem to work okay. I can't say I heavily use either anymore, but opening those I have around look okay for the most part. In some cases I have fonts used in MS on my Windows box that I don't have in Linux, which can cause some really ugly formatting in documents like my resume. Other than font, the only things i see messed up at all are weird formatted things I let MS do, again on my resume with things like the multiple nesting of formatting, which is an error on my part to let MS format the page for me.

I don't know if that helps or not.

This can happen. OpenOffice.org does a great job of opening MS Office files, however it isn't a perfect clone.

I've found that most of my .doc files are fine, however there are one or two where the original settings haven't been converted exactly correct. Since I no longer use MS Office I've then edited them in OpenOffice.org and converted them to .odt (Microsof$ will soon realise they'll have to make Office compatible with this format when everyone starts moving over to it)

I only then make a .doc format copy when absolutely essential.
