Okay, this is probably a pretty stupid question, but I just got me a copy of Mandrake 10.1 community and I want to throw OO on it. I downloaded OOo_1.1.3_LinuxIntel_install, and so far, so good. I go to install it as root in the /opt directory, and I get a message that says something to the extent of to have full features of OO, a Java Runtime Environment is needed. Okay... still, no problem. I go to Tucows, and download Java 2 Software Development Kit. Well, what I end up with is a file called: j2re-1_4_2-beta-linux-i586.bin

So, anyways... I am a total Linux newbie. I will get this Linux thing sooner or later. I have no idea what to do with a .bin file. I tried the most logical thing I could think of: put that sucker in the /bin directory... sounds pretty logical, right? I guess thats not what I am supposed to do though. Because when I go back into the OO installer and point it to the /bin directory for a Java Runtime Environment, it comes back with nothing.

Like I said, I am very new to the Linux thing, but I am also frustrated with MS, and so I figured I would give it a shot. I am sure that this has got to be a pretty simple thing for a Linux Novice. Anyways, any help would be appreciated. I also just wanted to say that this is a GREAT forum! Although I haven't posted much here, I have found the solutions to the few problems I have had so far. Keep up the great work!

It does seem logical. But a bin file is an installation file. You execute it by
./filename.bin
you need to be root.

Ah ha! Of course, I had tried to just excute it, but it wasn't set as an executable file... I kept getting a message that said to change its extension. Thinking like a traditional Windows user didn't get me very far. After doing a ll -l in the console, I realized I had to change the permissions, duh!
