OpenOffice

I'm using RH9 installed with OpenOffice 1.1. I have noticed that OpenOffice is very slow to open and fairly slow throughout.

Is there a solution to this problem or can someone suggest another Office program to use?

I notice it runs slowly too, but my computer is only a PI 5 200MHz w/ MMX, so I thought it was just my computer. How did you install it? I ended up installing it in my /opt directory, then I have Workstation installs in the users' directories...

There's the gnome office suite, consisting of abiword (word proc) gnucalc (spreadsheet) and something else I forget. It's not bad stuff.

There's also the Koffice suite, but I've never used any of em, dunno if they work.

KOffice is the only other "suite" I know of. Otherwise, individual apps are out there, AbiWord for instance.

IMHO - I find that OpenOffice was even a bit slow back when it was a little known program called StarOffice from an even lesser known company called Star Division. But it seems to have overall the best Office file type support than all the others.

Aye, I put up with it's slowness (really only at loading for me) merely because of it's pretty good support for MS documents.

I have to have OpenOffice on my computer because I havn't found any other programs that can import and export Word and Excel files as easily. And when you have one computer hooked up to the printer running WinXP w/ OfficeXP, and another computer running Linux, you'd bet that the Linux computer would have to bow to the computer w/ the printer...

OO slow

If it has been faster before, than you might have a problem with the file pspfontcache.

In this case the reason is that the file ~/OpenOffice1.1/user/psprint/pspfontcache gets bigger and bigger when OO is used.

Try deleting this file. (Note that is your OpenOffice directory which is located in your home directory).

Then run OOo once to regenerate it as a very small file and remove the write access to the file.

Example:
cd ~/.openoffice/user/psprint
rm pspfontcache
soffice
chmod -w pspfontcache

Have fun,
micha

Thanks, Micha, this was the trick I was looking for. It took me about a minute to print one page.

Thanks, Micha. It helped to reduce the startup time from 1'8" to 7"!
7 seconds isn't bad, is it?
I feel like I bought a new computer!
