opening cd-rom

I'm not sure whether this isn't a hardware question, but there must be a software sollution, so here goes:

I'm having problems with my cd-rom drive. I tried to use cdrdao to copy a cd, but due to copy protection, the drive went haywire. I opened it without unmounting and subsequently inserted a new cd. The new cd doesn't appear on my desktop, but I've been able to use cdrdao to extract the data to a file. Now, the drive will not open if I push the eject button and I get the following message when I try to mount / unmount

$ umount /media/cdrecorder/
umount: /media/cdrecorder is not mounted (according to mtab)
$ mount /media/cdrecorder
/dev/hdc: Input/output error
mount: /dev/hdc: can't read superblock

the errors are the same if I do it a s root.
How do I get the drive to respond without rebooting?

try umount /dev/hdc
You could try a -n or a -f after the umount and before the /dev/hdc

I managed to open it using k3b(!!). Somehow, even though mount couldn't access the disk, I only needed to right click it and select eject in k3b to open the drive. What can k3b do that mount can't?

if the CD has no data on it, I think it is impossible to mount it

The thing is, mounted or unmounted, I wasn't able to open the drive, and k3b did it. I'd like to know how. It's a bit stupid having to open k3b to simply open a drive. Anyway, I have a perfectly good cd in my drive now, which I can mount and unmount, but I can't eject it in any way... stuck again!

First: Happy Birthday
yes it's a very annoying problem... have you try with the "eject" command (If it is installed on your system)
else check the following values:
Code:
[14:11][olivier@gentoo ~]$cd /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/
[14:27][olivier@gentoo /proc/sys/dev/cdrom]$cat autoclose
1
[14:27][olivier@gentoo /proc/sys/dev/cdrom]$cat autoeject
0
[14:27][olivier@gentoo /proc/sys/dev/cdrom]$cat check_media
0
[14:27][olivier@gentoo /proc/sys/dev/cdrom]$cat lock
1
'cause I know that one time I've modified autoeject value and then each time I tried to acces my CD drive, it opened

Thanks. Isn't age supposed to bring wisdom? Well I don't feel any wiser...

I tried
Code:
[linmix@localhost cdrom]$ eject cdrecorder
eject: unable to eject, last error: Invalid argument
[linmix@localhost cdrom]$ mount /media/cdrecorder/
[linmix@localhost cdrom]$ eject /media/cdrecorder/
eject: unable to eject, last error: Invalid argument
As you can see to no avail. Then I tried:
Code:
[linmix@localhost ~]$ cd /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/
[linmix@localhost cdrom]$ cat autoclose
1
[linmix@localhost cdrom]$ cat autoeject
0
[linmix@localhost cdrom]$ cat check_media
0
[linmix@localhost cdrom]$ cat lock
1
Is this OK?
Any other suggestions?

kdeeject /media/cdrecorder worked!
But, I got the following error message on the console:
Code:
[root@localhost cdrom]# kdeeject /media/cdrecorder/
Session management error: Authentication Rejected,
reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are
supported and host-based authentication failed
plus a pop-up saying:
KDE Eject - KDialog
Eject /media/cdrecorder failed!

Strange!
Still, saved me rebooting!
-------------------------------------------------------------------
[root@localhost cdrom]# uptime
20:45:17 up 8 days, 2:14, 2 users, load average: 0.28, 0.17, 0.08
