I'm not sure whether this isn't a hardware question, but there must be a software sollution, so here goes:
I'm having problems with my cd-rom drive. I tried to use cdrdao to copy a cd, but due to copy protection, the drive went haywire. I opened it without unmounting and subsequently inserted a new cd. The new cd doesn't appear on my desktop, but I've been able to use cdrdao to extract the data to a file. Now, the drive will not open if I push the eject button and I get the following message when I try to mount / unmount
$ umount /media/cdrecorder/
umount: /media/cdrecorder is not mounted (according to mtab)
$ mount /media/cdrecorder
/dev/hdc: Input/output error
mount: /dev/hdc: can't read superblock
the errors are the same if I do it a s root.
How do I get the drive to respond without rebooting?
I managed to open it using k3b(!!). Somehow, even though mount couldn't access the disk, I only needed to right click it and select eject in k3b to open the drive. What can k3b do that mount can't?
The thing is, mounted or unmounted, I wasn't able to open the drive, and k3b did it. I'd like to know how. It's a bit stupid having to open k3b to simply open a drive. Anyway, I have a perfectly good cd in my drive now, which I can mount and unmount, but I can't eject it in any way... stuck again!
First: Happy Birthday
yes it's a very annoying problem... have you try with the "eject" command (If it is installed on your system)
else check the following values:
