Opening a file with OpenOffice

My problem is that ever time I open a file with openoffice, not only does the file open, but
OOo creates a blank document as well. Does anyone know how to stop this behavior?

I have been using OpenOffice for sometime (mostly on Fedora, RedHat and Solaris) and I seem to recall a similar problem on Solaris when I was first playing with it, but in my experience the problem seemed to be resolved with a upgrade to a more recent version of OO. Are you still experiencing this problem, if so what version of OO are you currently using?
