Openbox

So I wanted to try something other than KDE and Gnome, so I got Openbox..

Problem is, I have no idea how to use it.. So I have 3 questions at this point if anyone can help..

1. In the right click menu it says "Web browser" and it opens Konqueror which I hate.. Can I tell it to open mozilla or firefox?

2. Can I get some kind of panel to show programs running (like the taskbar in windows)..

3. Can I have a system tray / notification area where icons like gaim can go?

Thanks

Hi there

1. In the right click menu it says "Web browser" and it opens Konqueror which I hate.. Can I tell it to open mozilla or firefox?

Almost certainly you can. I have never used OpenBox but if it's like the other "boxes" there'll be a .openbox directory in /home/user. It will contain a menu file that can be edited using ViM or something like it. Fluxbox menu editing is so simple ---- though it terrified me at first ( ) and I'm sure OpenBox is similar. Just replace {konqueror} with {mozilla-firefox} or whatever (that is a stab in the dark!!}

2. Can I get some kind of panel to show programs running (like the taskbar in windows

One of the points of the "box" window managers is that they do not waste resources. The more things you add, the more you are defeating the object of using these managers in the first place. I run KDE on my home workstation because I want eye candy but on many systems I use Fluxbox --- out of the box, to save resources. Check out the command "top" and gkrellm. I'm sure that you can use something like bbpanel (I hope I have the name correct)

3. Can I have a system tray / notification area where icons like gaim can go?

Isn't this the same as number 2??

Good luck!!
