Open Office takes for ever

I am running Mandrake 9.2 with KDE. Generally very happy (apart from KDE losing the position of icons after shut down for some reason) KDE automatically opens Galleon web browser and Evolution for email in separate windows.

My problem is Open Office. It takes almost two minutes to load up the wordprocessor and if I want to print anything I may as well go and have a cigarette because it can take even longer for the printing to commence.

The strange thing is that my daughter can open it within seconds and printing isn't a problem.

So it has to be something to do with my user settings but I just can't work out what. Can anyone out there suggest a solution ?

Thanks

Colin

You should have a look at OpenOffice forum http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=1
There are posts about Ooo being slow at startup, and a few different solutions about it (pspfontcache size in ~/.openoffice/user/psprint, for instance).

Thanks I looked at the site but the only likely answer was to fiddle around with the memory options in tools/options. I tried this with no effect.

I suspect that the problem is more fundamental because I also have a temprary freeze (for around 3 seconds or so) when Evolution sends mail.

If you looking for a lean word processor, and don't need all the integration of functions that make OpenOffice a hog, try abiword.
