Open Office crashing on saving

As described above, need to do a recovery every time I start up openoffice and it crashes everytime you save.

Distro: Ubuntu 8.04
Openoffice - 2.4

Have tried th following:

1) selecting cancel to recovery - this fixed the problem temporarily but problem returned after a day or two.
2) Upgrading software
3) Reinstalling software
4) Creating new user profile

Are your java packages up-to-date ?
Completely removed ~/.openoffice.org/ ?
Tried with another user ?

Whenever I have a save problem of any sort I try saving to /tmp to ensure it's not some crazy permissions problem.
