Launch mplayer from the command line and watch the error message(s) that appear when you try to view the flick or when starting up. You may not have a working X11 xv driver, for instance.

Type mplayer -vo help to view the different video drivers. When you have found one that works for you and your hardware you could make the changes permanent by setting them in your personal preferences file (~/.mplayer/config and ~/.mplayer/gui.conf I believe).

Thank you, it also helped me.

By the way, I found that you don't need to edit the configuration file manually, If you start MPlayer from the GUI, you can right click on the screen, Select 'Preferences' and on the Video Tab, select different drivers until you select one that works.
