Only lynx can connect out, pppd compression?

I'm having a lot of trouble with my internet connection. Basically, the only browser that can connect to the internet is lynx. I have Opera, Galeon and Mozilla. But I did get it working perfectly last week some time, and I noticed pppd had loaded a compression module. Using wvdial, (with which I have had no other problems), is there a way to force pppd to load the compression routines?

I have Opera set up as my mail client, so I would appreciate a hasty response.

I have now created a new user specifically for dialout. This is working for now, so it's not a compression problem. Does anyone have any ideas on why my main user can't connect out properly?

Here are the groups for main user shack: shack dialout cdrom audio dip video
Here are the groups for dialout only user dial: dial dialout dip

it has been in my experience with Mozilla that it occassionally flakes out. One time, I was surfing and all of the sudden, Mozilla shut down. I'm not sure what the exact cause is. My guess is something to do with the cache.

My solution was to re-install Mozilla. Be sure to copy your bookmarks and stuff.

I doubt a reinstall will help. I've already tried that (I use Opera), but it doesn't seem to be a problem with the browser - it seems to be permissions on the dialer or something rediculous like that.
