Hi and Welcome to LinuxQuestions.org

Use the search feature and put in "old" and "laptop" and see what comes up. There are many threads here asking that

Also, I would say that Redhat 7.1, or 7.3 would work well on your laptop. May even want to try Redhat 6.2. An old version of Mandrake may work well too. Go to www.distrowatch.com and check out some of the info there.
If I was building your laptop I would load Slackware Linux on it. Maybe version 8.0....but that's me

You can also check out our reviews section by clicking on the "reviews" button at the upper right part of the site.

To download CD's (if you have a high speed connection) try this out:

www.linuxiso.org

To purchase CHEAP Linux CD's try this out:

There is another alternative for acquiring a copy of an older distro. Check out the Linux section of any major book store. You will most undoubtedly find a book on their shelves that includes an older copy of Red Hat. A recent visit to my local Borders and Barnes & Noble turned up Red Hat 5.2, 6.1, and several flavors of V.7.

Being that you are dealing with an early Pentium, your BIOS will porbably not allow you to boot from CD, so you will have to create a boot floppy and use this in conjunction with the CD to load the OS.

Good luck,

Rob

There are a lot of "mini ISO" dostros... Try the Debian site for a distro of 180MB in total...
