Ok heres the problem of the day.... I can see my post count is going to sky rocket here lol... Out of the 10 differnt forums I have found these are by far the most helpful.
Ok so I'm trying to install wine. I get it gziped or un zipped whatever.... I go to the tools folder and I attempt to run the ./wineinstall file to setup wine right. When I run that I'm in root and it says you don't want to run this file as root. So I login as my regular user. I do a ./wineinstall now it says you do not have permissions. So being a Win2k Network admin I search around and find the user list and learn that my user that I am loggin in under has no permissions assigned to him. So Since I haven't recieved my Cybex Linux Complete book yet I just guess at what groups I should add. I figure I will add the user to the usr group and the ADM (Which I am assuming is admin group). So I go back to the console and do the same thing all over again and I get the same response Permission denied. Can anyone give me some insite on what to do. I'm steadily learning things. This is just the one that slowed me today.
On a brighter note I learned how to gzip and tar the file into directories and what not wo0t wo0t.... but can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong today.
For a quick and dirty fix, log in as root and type chmod 777 wineinstall. If you want to change the script owner for the user and group do a chown root.users wineinstall, where root is the user that owns it and users is the group that owns it. Sinc you are a Windows admin I might add that a file can only have one group owner unless you want to get into access control lists and such. The chmod 777 allows all users to read write and exectue that file.
as for permissions on files/dirs, if you enter "ls -l" in a console, you will see a "long" listing of the directory - the first group of 10 or so columns will indicate the permissions associated with each file and subdirectory.
I'd recommend reading the free docs at redhat.com or mandrake.com, or run a search at tldp.org - they have much better explanations than I can write - it's really very simple, just takes a bit of getting used to.
Problem not fixed guys this is the exact error I'm getting...
./configure: line 88: conf2394.sh: Permission denied
./configure: line 89: conf2394.sh: Permission denied
chmod: failed to get attributes of `conf2394.sh': No such file or directory
./configure: line 201: conf2394.file: Permission denied
./configure: line 949: config.log: Permission denied
Here is another quick and dirty one if the path to your wine directory is /usr/local/src/wine. chmod -R 777 /usr/local/src/wine. This will give read/write/execute to everything in the wine directory.
