Odd "reflection" in Mint 17 KDE coverflow alt-tab switching

I have alt-tab coverflow switching and, until I tried to install Riven in Wine this evening, it worked like a charm. Now, however, an odd effect has begun to occur -- it's like there's a dark reflection across the desktop. I have a screenshot but, as this is my first post, I can't see how to attach it.

PC's a Lenovo H530s with an nVidia graphics card with 2G of RAM (main PC has 8G of RAM) on an Intel i7 processor.

The splash screen also jumps up half a screen when it starts so it's presumably related.

Anyone have any ideas as to how I can track down the cause?

Partial reply -- found part of issue, how to fix?

It seems part of the problem is that, somewhere along the line, something in my config has set *a* resolution to 1680x1620 even though my monitor resolution is 1680x1050. I work from home using a Java/citrix application and this has detected my "fullscreen" size as 1680x1620. Is this a canvas size, a workspace size or what, and how do I find it and, more to the point, fix it?

EDITED TO ADD

It's something user-dependent -- I added a new user and that user doesn't have the issue.
