Octave installation problems

Hi!

I have installed the mathematical programme octave from the SuSE Linux 9.3 Pro DVD, but when I enter "octave" in the command line, it does not run the programme. So, I have downloaded it and unpacked it (www.octave.org). But now, I don't know what to do or enter in the console, as I am fairly new to linux. I have never compiled or built a programme in linux. So, if someone could tell me what I should enter, I would be very happy.

Thanks!

Are you sure it's installed? Is there anything in SuSe that you can use to check (I don't know, as I've never used SuSe)? Try doing

$ whereis octave

and see if that finds anything. It could just be that it's installed somewhere that's not in your $PATH.

If you want to install from source, read this guide.

#whereis octave
octave: /usr/bin/octave /usr/lib/octave /usr/share/octave /usr/share/man/man1/octave.1.gz

So it finds Octave, but it doesn't start. By the way, I have tried installing it from source...

So what happens when you do type "octave", what error messages do you get?

Heh, I thought by not starting you meant that it wasn't starting at all . I'd suggest checking the mailing list archives and if you don't find anything there, subscribe to the list and ask again. Are there no errors whatsoever in the terminal?
