Clara and gocr (look on http://freshmeat.net).
Kooka uses libgocr for recognititon, can't do
without gocr... ;)

I have tried gocr and the results have been less than optimal, with very well printed document at fairly high resolution.

Has anyone got good results with it or another package ? My needs are fairly basic really so I won't pay the kind of licenses kadmos are asking, but I don't mind paying for something good and soho oriented.

If you are not sattisfied with gocr, why dont write a message to the author?
Sending him an example. He will welcome it and adapt his program.

;)

Ocrad is another one found in a quick search of the Portage tree.

I agree with joerg10 too. That is a really great way to contribute back.

i do occasionally report bugs and problems but the problems were more than bugs, and i don't want to put someone off doing his stuff by going and tell him/her that his package sucks, even if i say it in a nice way.

if i was able to help with patches, i'd go for it. i am not so if it's more than a bug, i prefer to wait and come back rather than moan that his goodwill effort yields crap results and maybe discourage the guy.

that's why.
