Occasional X crashes, how to recover

Once in a while X will get stuck in some sort of loop (99% cpu) and the only way I can recover is by ssh'ing to the box and give it a nice -KILL.. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace don't work because apparently all keyboard input is handled by either X or the WM/DE you're running.

Is there a way to send a key combination (like "killall -KILL X" to anything other then X or something relying on X to run?
