Angry NVIDIA XServer driver crashes!

Hi,

I'm running ubuntu 10.10 I have a Samsung Syncmaster 205BW Monitor and I needed a graphic accelerator to run my science software and to view full screen videos. so I installed the NVIDIA 96.43.19 Driver as recomanded by unbuntu. Well the server installs OK but doesn't completely communicate with my monitor, I'm using GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X/AGP/SSE2 Graphic card. I'm unable to set the correct Resolution which is 1680X1050, the driver only list 1280X1024 and doesn't list the correct one. Also the driver Crashes when I try to set the CPU scaling, it's locked on stretch mode. Also when ubuntu loads X it doesn't accept the Xserver settings I have entered in the driver Set Up.The additional driver screen also says the Driver is active but not in use. I sent a bug report to NVIDIA but they never answered me back. Any Ideas and or Help is needed here. Thanks,

John

did you update your kernel recently? i have similar problems when i update my nvidia drivers but the updated kernel still isn't available(or vice-versa). afaik, there's a 1:1 matching for nvidia drivers and kernel releases from your distro. once i've updated both, it goes back to normal. what i do now is that i wait for both updates to be available rather than updating immediately once on or the other becomes available.

That card is very old, I don't know if it supports that resolution. If you think so try:

Quote:
Option "UseEDID" "FALSE"

Note that, rather than globally disable all uses of the EDID, you can individually disable each particular use of the EDID; e.g.,

Option "UseEDIDFreqs" "FALSE"
Option "UseEDIDDpi" "FALSE"
Option "ModeValidation" "NoEdidModes"
http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree8...ppendix-d.html

This will force the driver to ignore the EDID, which may be wrong and not list the right resolutions. Be careful tho, you must be sure that the card and monitor support the resolution you want.
