NVidia Surround vs intel8x0

Hello!

I just installed my Nvidia Sound Divers for Linux (I run Debian Sarge). I have an nForce3 250 on the K8N Neo2 Platinum motherboard. Still, I can't get surround to work. The Subwoofer and the left and right speakers are working, but rear and front are not.
I have setup nvmixer to 5.1 which is what I have. When I do lsmod this is (a piece of) what I get :
snd_intel8x0 33068 0
snd_ac97_codec 59268 1 snd_intel8x0
snd_pcm_oss 48168 0
snd_mixer_oss 16640 1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_pcm 85384 2 snd_intel8x0,snd_pcm_oss
snd_timer 23300 1 snd_pcm
snd_page_alloc 11144 2 snd_intel8x0,snd_pcm
gameport 4736 1 snd_intel8x0
snd_mpu401_uart 7296 1 snd_intel8x0
snd_rawmidi 23204 1 snd_mpu401_uart
snd_seq_device 7944 1 snd_rawmidi
snd 50660 9 snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_mpu401_uart,snd_rawmidi, snd_seq_device
nvsound 1539224 2
soundcore 9824 4 snd,nvsound

from which I conclude the nvsound module is loaded. Does anyone have a clue what's wrong here? I followed the installer manual in every step...

When I check my mixer settings using kmix it only displays 3 columns : Volume, Speaker, Line-out. But it displays "NFORCE AUDIO" in kmix. So it must be installed. I have also tried aumix but that's no difference either...
And I guess alsaconf was used to 'install' your soundcard while using ALSA. NVidia Drivers rely on OSS. So that's no use I guess...
Anyone?

I spent most of the day trying to get it to work but no go. Still only getting sound from front and sub. Nothing from center or rear speakers. Here's what I have tried:

1) Onboard ALC850 sound with intel8x0 driver (ALSA)
2) Onboard ALC850 sound with nvsound driver (OSS) from nvidia website
3) Creative soundblaster live 24bit card with ca0106 driver (ALSA)

All combinations give same result: only front and sub speakers work. And yes, I have tried messing with the mixer volume controls. Tried aumix, alsamixer, and nvmixer. I am giving up. Sounds pretty good with 3 out of 6 speakers working anyway. It seems that a lot of others have had the same problem. It is strange that all different combinations of drivers and soundcards and still none work.

the only solution is to build your driver as a module in your kernel and enable alsaconf support in your kenel

Ankscorek,

The problem is not that there is no sound. I currently am using the intel8x0 alsa driver built as a module in the kernel. There is sound, but only from the front speakers. The surround sound (rear and center speakers) do not work. I have alsa tried the OSS driver from nvidia and the alsa snd_hda driver from alsa. All give the same result. Not sure what the problem is as all different drivers give the same result. I think many others have had the same problem which has not been resolved.
