nvidia kernel fails to initialise
I've installed the nvidia drivers without any problems or error messages. nv-chooser advised me which ones to download, is it fail safe?
The x-server fails to initialise, I use verbose 5 to trap a max of messages. There are NO other error messages what so ever in the log file. I am puzzled... RH8.0 kernel 2.4.18-14 standard distro + developement options. |
i would doubt that it is entirely failsafe nothing really is, are you quite sure that youve edited xf86config correctly? if so then you might try again but installing everything form source instead of rpm or srpm

I'm having the same problem. However, if I wait 4 minutes (I mean, really f-o-u-r minutes), then I get nVidia splash and everything seems to work fine (but I have not checked the frame rate -I don't know how to do it, and what is the benchmark rate I should find).
I have run the nv_check.sh script (see nVidia site); all is fine but the kernel; it does not find it. But here is another trick: nv_check greps for NVIDIA while in the kernel there is the module nvidia (lower case); furthermore, it is mentioned very often NVDriver, which adds confusion to the right name it should be used. Anybody can help? |
dont bother with nvchooser, just compile it all from source and then make absolutely sure that you have your xf86config edited correctly, i think there is a thread running around in linux - newbie that has a "simplified" version of the nvidia readme and directions though it might be somewhere else
