i586 is pentium i686 is pentium pro/pentium2 and above same for corresponding athlon processors

This ones even easier to follow except you gotta catch the typo "XF86config-4" should read "XF86Config-4" look

You got it right. now video is fast. thanks. but why did you reinstall the o.s.?
I went through the same problem, i just did a kernel upgrade in text mode then re adjusted the kernel. also i deleted the nvidia.o driver and then did an upgrade install from the cd's to fix x. it took a long time to fix but i didn't lose my infromation. you hit the nail right on the head by installing NVIDIA_GLX
instead of upgrading it. thanks again.
