Nvidia driver installs -> no gui. Removal of module with yast fixes : ' (

Hello and thank you for your time (New and learning)

I just want to install the newest Nvidia driver for my 7900gs. I'm running opensuse 10.2 and using yast. I have followed multiple installation instructions including the one found here

en.opensuse.org/NVIDIA#The_easy_way

I have no problems setting up installation sources or downloading/installing the modules, but when I restart X after installing the drivers kde will not load. When I use any command related to starting kde, I receive a wall of text about how kde and all associated files could not be started/found. In order to fix it all I do is open up yast and remove the modules, restart X and its fixed. I've tried just about every thing I could think of (The first time this happened I didn't know what to do so I ended up formatting : \ If necessary I'll post the entire wall of text verbatim, but I think my problem is on a more fundamental level. After hours of troubleshooting (like a toddler) I haven't found any threads or steps I can take to resolve the problem. Can anyone give me some direction?

I'm afraid we need to see those error messages - you can check the xorg log.

After installing the nvidia driver, did you run sax2 to configure Xorg.conf?

From the SuSE nvidia-installer HOWTO:
Quote:
2) Use the nvidia installer for 1.0-9746.

sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9746-pkg1.run -q

3) Configure X.Org with

sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia (0 is a digit, not a letter!)

NOTE: There is no need to try to enable 3D support. It's already
enabled, when the nvidia driver is running.

After installing the nvidia drivers, i stop X server. When I use the command startx I get this

FATAL: Module nvidia not found.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel Module!
(EE) NVIDIA(0): ***Aborting***

I don't know where the file Nvidia-linux-x86-1.0-9746 is, when I run sh "Nvidia-linux..." It says file not found.
If I run the command sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia it just tells me

Sax: No X server is running.
Sax: Will start own server if needed.

I have googled this wiki

wiki.x.org/wiki/NVIDIAProprietaryDriver

Could that be the problem?

I have googled this wiki wiki.x.org/wiki/NVIDIAProprietaryDriver
Could that be the problem?

Nope: the wiki shows a problem with the driver resulting in a failure to initialise. Your problem is that the driver won't load. The reason is because the driver isn't found. This suggests that you haven't finished the install.

You need to restore your old xorg.conf in order to get back to a working xserver.

You can go through the steps to installation ... run sax, then restart X.

Of course, you can always go "the hard way" and use the nvidia install script.
