NVIDIA driver installation problem
 

I just lost my Beloved windows on a laptop. So i decided to install ubuntu. (12.10). Whenever i press the home button the screen goes crasy and the computer eventually dies. I blame my NVIDIA drivers for this.

So i was going to install the new driver. It's friggin' hard though.

I downloaded the file named: NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.12-pkg1.run

Then i went in to ctr+alt+f1

There i write

(Login)

sudo service lightdm stop

cd /home/gustaf(my name)/Desktop

sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.12-pkg1.run


And it launches....

Everything goes as i want it to until i reach the "kernel part" of the installation.

Then i get the error message:


ERROR: Unable to determine the verision of the kernel sources located in '/lib/modules/3.5.0-17-generic/build'. Blah blah blah


Any ideas on what to do? Thank you


If i knew how to fin out i would of course write the name of my graphics card here

Is there. reason you're tryong to use the drivers from nVIDIA's website and not using the Additional Drivers in Ubuntu to install them from the repositories? If not then the latter will likely cause you less issues in the long run.

Woooaa.... There is one of those? How do i get it? Sounds easy!

There should be something called "Additional Drivers" in your menu (I think you can search for it) which will let you know which non-free drivers you can install. You can get to this by typing "additional" into the search thingy (Dash?).
