nVIDIA chipset driver problems

Just got my new Debian Sarge system working, but my nFORCE 3 audio isn't working....downloaded the drivers, but I have an error message. It says to set the CC enviroment variable to the compiler used for compiling the kernel. I tried setting the CC variable to gcc, but it didn't work...how do I know what compiler my kernel was compiled with? Thanks!

EDIT: The error is "gcc-version-check failed"

Is the c compiler installed on your system?
Type gcc in the terminal and post what is says.
How did you set it to gcc?
/bin/gcc

If I type gcc it says that there is no input file for gcc...same with if I type $CC...
I just apt-get'ed gcc.
