NVidia 6629 but no GLX
 
OK, i've installed Linux kernel 2.6.9, on a slackware 10.0 (more or less current). i've had xorg running fine for the past however many month on the previous nvidia drivers. with kernel 2.6.6. (edit) it has come to my attention that i have only X 6.8.0 installed rather than the latest 6.8.1, sadly i'm on dialup and can't just grab the new files atm ... if anyone can confirm that that is the cause of the problem that'd be nice too (/edit)

Today i updated to the latest 6629, and installed the new kernel; the old nvidia drivers not working with it for some reason, and the patched ones not being recognised by the xserver.

OK, i got one error at startup (boot) telling me that ldconfig found an error with a magic bit (or something to that effect) because the lib??NVIDIA.so ... was not an ELF file. This did not worry me too much, but could be related.

i log on in init 3, and then startx manually. the nvidia logo appears, KDE seems stable, pointer shadows (enabled as part of the nvidia driver configuration) appear.

I try to run glxgears (ok ok doom3) and i get the following:
chakkerz@stormcrow:~$ glxgears
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
glxgears: Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual.


Doom3 and NWN give similar errors.

I definitely have Load "glx" in my xorg.conf file, and nvidia as the driver (not nv or anything else). I've had a browse and a google and those two were the most common error sources (shy of not installing nvidia drivers) so i'm at a little bit of a loss.

it clearly says that GLX is being loaded ... although this line towards the end is confusing me :

This is the error that causing your problem

(EE) GLX is not supported with the Composite extension

You cant run composite extension and GLX at the same time.

To disable it, look for a line /etc/X11/xorg.conf similar to the following and comment it out

Option "Composite" "Enable"

or change it to

Option "Composite" "Disable"

bingo ... i forgot i had that in there from playing with dropshadows and translucencies ...

Thanks (though i feel silly :) )

Odd thing though, it worked before i upgraded the driver ... guess they changed something.
