Num Lock & Nano / MC Issues

Hi all, I am having a problem with Numlock in Linux. I am using SSH to login to my server. At command line at number keys on my keypad with numlock turned on work fine. But if I launch the nano editor or midnight commander, the number keys no longer function and act more like arrow keys.

Any suggestions? I searched google for this and tryed resetting the terminal, nothing seems to work. Have actually had this problem for years with Midnight Commander but it was never a big deal. Now it seems I want to finally solve the problem.

Thanks
