ntpd causes slow boot-up
 

Hey guys, I've not got much hope for an answer to this, but here goes anyway... I recently switched the ntpd option on in my Fedora Core 2 installation, and noticed a significant increase in boot time associated with ntpd starting up.

Is there any way to change that so that the boot-up procedure does not sit around while waiting for ntpd to finish up? (Isn't this a multi-tasking operating system? :p ) Maybe there is a configuration option to ntpd such that when it gets called at startup, it goes off into the background and does its communications and synchronizations on its own time without delaying my system become interactive?

For a personal desktop system, what dangers or theoretical reasons would there be to not do that?

you can tweak the timeout settings and the servers ntp is asking. read the manpages for ntpd; the conffiles are afaik /etc/ntp*.
