DON'T

NTFS is propriety, and M$osft change it all the time. There is new experimental write support in 2.6.13 - didn't work for me.
Haven't tried the same testing under 2.6.14.
VFAT can be allocated big under Linux, and XP will use it, even though it won't allocate them as big. Create several if you find things are too slow with the big partitions.

Sure, go ahead and use NTFS, linux support is great! However if you were to lose some data, we don't care. FAT32 is your best bet but for a 300GB disk, I'd be splitting it up into 3 x 90GB partitions.
